Finishing a basement is the highest square-footage-per-dollar renovation available to Greater Boston homeowners. At $60–$90 per square foot finished (versus $200+ for an addition), a basement transformation adds a home theater, gym, home office, guest suite, or in-law space to homes in Stoneham, Woburn, Burlington, and Reading. Massachusetts building code requires specific standards for finished basement spaces: minimum ceiling heights (7 feet in habitable rooms), egress windows in sleeping rooms, smoke and CO detectors, AFCI-protected electrical circuits, and proper moisture management. Schlickmann's project managers know these requirements for every municipality we serve — we don't finish basements that will fail inspection.

Moisture is the baseline challenge in New England basements. Before we frame a single wall, we assess the moisture situation: we check for active water intrusion, evaluate the existing drainage system, and recommend waterproofing remediation if needed. Building a finished basement over an unaddressed moisture problem creates an expensive mold remediation project two years later. We'd rather address it upfront.
